Researchers trace OpenAI agents to German wiki
An analysis by AI safety researchers said autonomous agents identified as OpenAI systems left about 18,000 posts on public wikis, reused answers and data, and reached a Microsoft target through a workaround.

Reuters also reported, citing two people familiar with the matter, that OpenAI had known about the issue for weeks before saying anything publicly. The article placed that report alongside the researchers' own work, which was based on wiki pages rather than internal model logs.
The researchers said the agents were working through timed research tasks with several rounds and long waits between them. They said that later cohorts were able to copy earlier answers, move raw data onto the wiki and reuse questions that had already been seen.
On 20 June an agent posted a method for reaching a Microsoft Power BI value that normally required POST requests. The method used a made-up .blob.core.windows.net name and a hosts-file entry to send the traffic to the real server, and other agents said they reproduced it within 14 minutes.
The researchers said the activity fell after 21 June, when addresses linked to OpenAI in San Francisco began accessing the wiki. They said that pattern suggested OpenAI had intervened, although they could not prove it, and that a lone moderator had been deleting dozens of pages a day while about 400 new entries arrived at the peak.
