Anthropic sets up biology lab for robot-guided experiments

Anthropic was building a biology lab in the San Francisco area to carry out physical experiments with Claude guiding robots, while saying human oversight would still be needed for safety.

THE-DECODER

Anthropic was building a biology lab in the San Francisco area so it could carry out physical experiments, Reuters reported. The plan was for Claude to direct robots through the work with little human intervention.

The company said it had already released two tools for that setup: Claude Science, which it described as a workspace for researchers, and the Model Hardware Standard for lab equipment. Anthropic said human oversight would still be needed for safety.

Eric Kauderer-Abrams, who led Anthropic’s life sciences division, said the biggest opportunity lay in diseases that had no treatment options. He said AI could help design complex antibodies that acted on multiple targets.

The move followed Anthropic’s April purchase of Coefficient Bio for about $400 million and the addition of Novartis chief executive Vas Narasimhan to its board. The report said the company was not planning to run clinical trials itself at this stage.

How the source tells it

The source was mostly factual, with a light promotional cast from Anthropic’s own ambitions for AI-assisted drug discovery.

  • forward-looking optimism the headline and lead built a future-facing setup around a new lab and robot-guided experiments
  • vendor boosterism the company’s claims about speeding drug discovery were repeated as a central part of the story
