AI agent breaches DIVD network
The Dutch Institute for Vulnerability Disclosure said an autonomous AI agent was used in a cyberattack on its network, while investigators said the purpose and impact were still unclear.
- DIVD said it had been hacked after seven years of uneventful operations and said an AI agent had carried out the intrusion autonomously.
- The organisation said evidence from the ongoing investigation pointed to exploitation of a vulnerability in an undisclosed system.
- DIVD said the affected system was not Citrix NetScaler and that the AI agent handled post-exploitation activity on its network.
- The organisation said it had informed the police, Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens and the National Cyber Security Center.
- DIVD said it would publish a fuller update on 1 October and would notify other possible victims of the same flaw as soon as it could.
The Dutch Institute for Vulnerability Disclosure said it had been hacked and described the intrusion as being carried out by an autonomous AI agent. It said the attack was unusual for the organisation, which had operated for seven years without an incident of this kind.
DIVD said evidence from its continuing investigation indicated that an attacker had used a vulnerability in an undisclosed system. The organisation said the motive and effect of the attack were still not clear.
In an update on Monday, DIVD said it was withholding some details so it would not affect the investigation or expose more victims. It said the agent had operated on its network, deciding each next step on its own and leaving enough information behind for researchers to study.
The organisation said the flaw was not in Citrix NetScaler. It also said the AI agent had taken part in post-exploitation activity and had interfered with its own attack during password spraying.
DIVD said it had informed the police, Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens and the National Cyber Security Center. It said it planned to provide a more detailed update on 1 October and to warn other possible victims when it could.

How the source tells it
The piece was mostly a factual incident report, with a modest novelty-and-alarm edge from DIVD’s description of an autonomous AI-powered intrusion.
- novelty framing the breach as one the organisation had not seen before because the method involved an autonomous AI agent
- alarm repeating a description of the incident as messy and stressing that the case was serious
