Florida seeks injunction over ChatGPT and minors

Florida’s attorney general asked a court to block OpenAI from giving ChatGPT human-like traits, marketing it to minors and developing new models without third-party safety reviews, in an expansion of an earlier lawsuit.

THE-DECODER

James Uthmeier, Florida’s attorney general, asked a court to bar OpenAI from letting ChatGPT present itself in human-like ways and from making the service available to minors. He also sought an order that would stop the company developing new models unless outside safety checks had been approved.

The filing said ChatGPT used first-person wording and simulated feelings to create the impression of a trustworthy relationship. It also said those methods were intended to keep people using the product and to gather training data.

Florida had already brought a lawsuit against OpenAI in June. That case accused ChatGPT of giving information to mass shooters, providing self-harm instructions and drawing in young users.

OpenAI had recently added parental controls for teenagers and said it would add more safeguards after a teenager died. Drew Pusateri told The Verge that the company had paused training of its most capable models and wanted to work with Florida on industry-wide AI rules.

The court had not yet decided the motion.
