OpenAI adds cloud Codex tools and new APIs
OpenAI announced updates to Codex, its CLI, code review workflow and security tooling, along with new and updated APIs that extend the system across devices and cloud environments.
- OpenAI announced the changes at its Dev Day event on Tuesday.
- Codex gained reusable cloud development environments that can be reached from different devices.
- The Codex CLI update allowed developers to start and direct tasks using their voice.
- OpenAI also announced a new code review flow in the ChatGPT desktop app and a security toolset called Codex Security Cloud.
- The company said its updated Agents API supported computer use and Amazon’s Bedrock Managed Agents on AWS.
OpenAI introduced new capabilities for Codex that it said would make the software engineering agent usable beyond a developer’s laptop. The update centred on reusable cloud development environments that could be reached from any device.
The company said the environments were more persistent and configurable than the separate cloud tasks Codex had already been able to create. It also said the system could give teams a shared workspace with approved settings and permissions.
OpenAI said the Codex CLI would gain voice control for starting and directing tasks, while a new /agents view would help users delegate work and follow several tasks at once. It also said the interface had been redesigned for longer sessions.
The ChatGPT desktop app was to get a code review flow in which users could read summaries, inspect changes and ask Codex about possible issues before sending feedback on GitHub pull requests or GitLab merge requests. OpenAI also said Codex could carry out an initial review while the user was away.
On the security side, OpenAI said Codex Security Cloud would let developers scan GitHub repositories on demand, on a schedule or when new commits arrived. The company also announced a Decisions API using Luna, and an updated Agents API that supported computer use and Amazon’s Bedrock Managed Agents to build agents running entirely on AWS.
