OpenAI reopened its $200-a-month Pro subscription to new sign-ups and reduced the API credits included per dollar by half. Thibault Sottiaux, an OpenAI employee, said subscribers should still be able to do more than they could a month earlier.
Sottiaux pointed to GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, which he said shipped this week at half the API price of the models they replaced. He also said the old five-hour usage cap was gone and that subscribers could spread their weekly allowance however they wished.
He said the change reflected a shift away from heavily subsidised subscriptions and towards pay-per-use pricing. He added that Microsoft already used that approach in some parts of Copilot, and said API prices should fall enough for most customers to buy usage as needed.
