Andreessen Horowitz ranks consumer AI apps and spending
Andreessen Horowitz’s latest consumer AI report combined traffic and spending data to show ChatGPT still leading, spending concentrated among a small payer base, and personal agents beginning to draw users.
- Andreessen Horowitz said this was the seventh Top 100 AI Consumer Apps list and added a spending ranking based on YipitData for the first time.
- The report said 11 products made their first appearance, the fewest debuts across its seven lists.
- It said ChatGPT had about twice Gemini's August web visits, six times Claude's, and three times as many U.S. consumer paid subscribers as Claude or Gemini.
- YipitData's U.S. panel showed 4.5% of eligible consumers had an active paid personal subscription in August, and the top 1% of spenders accounted for 19.5% of observed consumer AI spend.
- Meta launched Muse on 9 September 2026, and the report said it reached 250,000 daily actives in its first week and 5 million downloads in under a month.
Andreessen Horowitz said this was the seventh edition of its Top 100 AI Consumer Apps list, which ranked web and mobile AI products by traffic. It added a spending ranking for the first time using YipitData, and said 11 products were new to the list.
The report said ChatGPT remained the leader, with roughly twice Gemini's August web visits and six times Claude's, and a larger lead on mobile. YipitData's panel also put ChatGPT at three times the number of U.S. consumer paid subscribers of Claude or Gemini.
The report said consumer AI use was broad but shallow, with 4.5% of eligible consumers in YipitData's panel holding an active paid personal subscription in August, up from 2.1% a year earlier. It said the top 1% of spenders generated 19.5% of observed consumer AI spend and spent an average of $903 a month.
The report said startup agents were beginning to attract users, and said Instinct passed 100,000 users in three weeks while staying invite-only. Meta launched Muse on 9 September 2026, and the report said Amazon shut off access to it within two weeks while Shopify, Instacart, OpenTable, Expedia, Ticketmaster and Plaid signed integrations.
