OpenAI was expected to tell staff that Sachin Katti would leave next month and continue in an advisory role, according to the Journal. Uday Ruddarraju was set to take over the company's computing strategy.
The Journal said Katti had joined OpenAI in late 2025 to lead the Stargate data-centre effort. That work initially slowed after OpenAI did not reach one agreement with SoftBank and Oracle, then made separate deals with them and later added contracts with providers including Amazon Web Services.
Katti also worked on efforts to have OpenAI lease its own data centres rather than rely only on rented capacity. In August, he helped secure a 10-gigawatt lease with SB Energy that included a financial guarantee from Nvidia, according to the Journal.
OpenAI's forecast for computing-power spending had risen to about $750 billion by 2030, compared with about $600 billion earlier in the year, according to the Journal. A separate executive involved in data-centre expansion also left during the summer, and OpenAI said in August that Denise Dresser and Brad Lightcap were leaving, after filing a confidential IPO prospectus with the SEC in June.
