Anthropic lists Claude model deprecations and retirement dates
Anthropic’s documentation page set out model lifecycle terms, separate retirement schedules for partner platforms, and a history of Claude model deprecations with replacement guidance.
- Anthropic used the page to list API deprecations and the recommended replacements for affected models.
- The page defined active, legacy, deprecated and retired states, and said retired models would no longer accept requests.
- The dates on the page applied to Anthropic-operated platforms, while Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud kept separate retirement schedules.
- Anthropic said it gave customers with active deployments at least 60 days’ notice before retirement for publicly released models.
Anthropic said it regularly retired older models as newer ones launched, and that customers affected by those changes would be told by email and in the documentation. It said the page covered all API deprecations and the replacement models it recommended.
The page defined four lifecycle states for models. It said deprecated models remained usable but were no longer recommended, while retired models could not be used and requests to them would fail.
The schedule on the page applied to Anthropic-operated platforms, including the Claude API, Claude Platform on AWS and Microsoft Foundry. It said Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud set their own schedules, so a model’s status could differ there.
Anthropic said developers should move usage to a replacement before the retirement date and test applications well ahead of time. It also said customers could export API usage from Claude Console to find deprecated-model calls.
The deprecation history listed notices for Claude Sonnet 4.5, Claude Opus 4.1, Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4, Claude Haiku 3, Claude Haiku 3.5, Claude Sonnet 3.7, Claude Sonnet 3.5, Claude Opus 3, Claude 2, Claude 2.1, Claude Sonnet 3, Claude 1 and Instant models. The page also said deprecated request parameters were handled differently by model, and that Python SDK v1.0 and later removed temperature, top_p and top_k so passing them raised a TypeError.
