Anthropic names Christopher Stubbs to Long-Term Benefit Trust
Anthropic appointed Harvard astrophysicist Christopher Stubbs to its Long-Term Benefit Trust, filling one of two vacancies as the company’s governance setup faces closer attention ahead of a possible listing.
- Anthropic named Christopher Stubbs, a Harvard University astrophysicist, to its Long-Term Benefit Trust.
- The trust can elect a majority of Anthropic’s board through a special class of stock with no economic value.
- Anthropic confidentially filed a draft registration statement with the SEC in June.
- Anthropic said Stubbs had recently written about keeping AI-assisted research reproducible when models give different answers to the same question.
Anthropic named Christopher Stubbs to its Long-Term Benefit Trust and said the appointment filled one of two open seats. Stubbs was the first physicist to join the trust, which already included Neil Buddy Shah, Richard Fontaine and Ben Bernanke.
Stubbs is known for research on the accelerating expansion of the universe and for later leading the ESSENCE supernova cosmology project. He also served as the first project scientist for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, was Harvard’s dean of science from 2018 to 2024, and is a member of JASON.
Daniela Amodei said Stubbs had shown that he followed evidence even when it went against established views in his field. Shah said Stubbs had led large collaborative efforts across academia, government and national laboratories, while Stubbs said he wanted AI to be developed for humanity’s long-term benefit.
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation, so it must balance its mission with shareholder returns. The trust’s stock gives it the right to elect an increasing share of the company’s seven-person board and eventually a majority, and the company also said it would place 5% of its shares into a separate Public Benefit Fund.
