Goldman Sachs limits AI coding tools to engineers

Goldman Sachs restricted advanced AI coding tools to engineers after previously letting traders and bankers use them, with the bank citing productivity and risk management for the change.

THE-DECODER

Goldman Sachs restricted most employees from advanced AI coding tools, keeping access for engineers only, according to Bloomberg and internal guidelines from October. The tools named in the report included Anthropic’s Claude Code and GitHub.

Bloomberg said traders and bankers had been using the tools to watch trading flows and produce content. The report also said the change had prompted frustration within the firm.

In July, Goldman chief information officer Marco Argenti had spoken positively about non-technical staff using AI to sketch out prototypes. He said those ideas could then be passed to engineers for production-scale work.

Goldman spokesperson Nick Carcaterra said the bank had cited a range of reasons, including productivity and risk management. He said the firm was now limiting the tools to employees best placed to use them over the long term.

How the source tells it

The piece is mostly straight news, but it adds a mild sense of reversal and internal tension through the U-turn framing and the claim of frustration inside Goldman Sachs.

  • reversal the change is presented as a sharp turn away from an earlier policy shift
  • frustration an internal emotional response is asserted without detailed sourcing
